Late 18th Century Spanish Colonial Antique Gilt and Painted Gesso Frame Settee
Antique ornate gilt wood gesso settee with woven cane back, with natural distress, Spanish colonial late 18th or early 19th century. No more lookin' for loveseats in all the wrong places!
I fell in love with this sofa the moment I saw it in a collection in northern Mexico, where the piece had been obtained from a hacienda. I examined the wood closely and I could see the many years of wear. The gilded surface had been rubbed back in a few spots and the the plasterwork was shyly looking back at me in certain spots through the red and green paint. I could see the effort the cabinet maker had put two hundred years ago, in recreating a European sofa probably commissioned by a wealthy lady. I was so happy to sit down and confirm the chair was as strong as it had ever been, I was also happy not to see any refreshening of the gilding or the paint work. The cane back is in perfect condition.
The only thing that had to be decided now was the fabric to reupholster this masterpiece. We decided on a soft chartreuse green nubuck leather with nail head trim accents. We knew it was the perfect match to the settee as soon as we found it at our favorite local leather shop
